| i'm not sure why but my mind always seems to find a way to come back to this topic of SUCCESS.. so I need to write this down.. or my ideas will forever clog the pores of my brain, if it has any
anyway what is SUCCESS? Is success getting a lot of money? I'm
really not sure if it is.. i've never been a big fan of chasing money.
I duno why. it's just never been my thing. I know that to a lot of my
peers, especially my friends from Hong Kong, money seems to be a very
important measure of success and even gratitude. In Cantonese
culture (ppl from Hong Kong are Cantonese) money, and NOT gifts, are
given to people on special occasions. To give you a clearer picture
of this, on my grandfather's birthday my aunts and uncles and parents
would hand my gramps with an envelope with a check in it. That's the
present. Pretty gangsta eh?
So basically, if u dont have
a good wad of cash on you at all times u can't socially show that you
like someone, even your own father. thats a big pressure to make lots
of cheddar.
I personally dont think money = success because some
ppl are just born with lots and others get it by sketchy means. Some
ppl get lucky too. I think money is important and we need a good amount
of it to survive. But is it a measure of success.. well i duno because
i still dont know what success really means lol thats what im tryin to
figure out...
Is SUCCESS the same as importance? So if im a doctor, lawyer, or rich business man that means im successful? Hmm
im sure a lot ppl think this.. and even im tempted to think this even
tho i still dont have my mind set on the definition of success but just
wait a minute...
if being a doctor or lawyer means ur successful
does that mean that all those kids and teens that didnt have role
models to teach them how to get there or all those kids that didnt have
the money or support to go to university are automatically
"unsuccessful" losers???? well that definition seems
convenient for our rich and connected ppl.. oh and what a coincidence..
those rich and connected ppl are the same ones who form our ideas of
what success is! what AN INTERESTING COINCIDENCE.
To me a person
who was able to get a good straight job after living in the ghetto with
few role models is a helluva lot more successful than a middle or upper
class person who becomes a doctor.. na meaaans?
...to be continued at a later date

| When do Good People do Bad Things?
My fourth year personality psychology class brought up some
very profound issues that I would like u to read if u have the time
or the interest. How and When do GOOD ordinary people do BAD things?
We've seen it happen again and again throughout history: the Holocaust
where millions of people were murdered in concentration camps at the
hands of Germans, the genocide in Rwanda where close to a million
people were murdered by the Hutu, in Tienaman Square in China where
students like you and me were run over by tanks while the whole world
watched on cable T.V. Horrible, horrible events have occurred around
the world but we seem to write these events off. We think "we would
never allow that to happen in this country! We're too smart about
that," or "we know better than that". But is it really about smarts?
Not really. And do we really know better? I DEFINITELY don't think we
do.
Psychology experiments have proved that ordinary good people can be
pushed into doing horrible things simply by pressuring them to do it.
In Milgrim's ground breaking
studies about authority and obedience we were shown that North
Americans can be pressured to kill someone just by telling them to do
so. These were real studies involving hundreds of men and women where
they were told to shock another "subject" if they answered a question
incorrectly. Basically the subjects were told that they were the
"teacher" and the other "subject" (who was really just an actor but the
real subject didn't know this) was supposed to be the "learner".
Whenever the learner answered a question incorrectly, the "teacher"
would shock him. These shocks increased in voltage with each incorrect
answer and the voltage machine was labelled: 10 volts, 40 volts, 100
volts, 150 volts etc. all the way to XXX.
But this is the crazy part. How many people do you think went all the
way to the XXX level of shock without stopping or leaving the
experiment? Let me also inform you that the "learner", who was in
another room would scream and beg for help when the level of shock
reached a certain voltage level. The "learner" would also stop making
any noise after repeated shocks at the "XXX" level, indicating that he
was either dead or unconcious. So take a guess.. how many people do you
think went all the way?
..
..
..
..
..
Here's the answer: 65% of the subjects went all the way to that fatal
level. Needless to say, this study STUNNED the scientific community.
This study PROVED that North Americans, like you and me would basically
kill another person if we were told to. Sure, many of the subjects
asked if they could stop but the person running the experimenter would
simply say "the experiement must go on, or it is essential that you
continue the experiment." And with that minimal amount of the pressure,
the subject would continue.
My point is this. Good, ordinary people like YOU and ME are capable of doing horrible things depending on the circumstances that
we are put in. Once WE realize this fact, we can then get closer to
changing the inner monster in all of us. Because even if you want to
believe that the Nazis were evil, or the Hutus in Rwanda were evil, or
the Chinese army was evil in murdering its OWN students, the fact is,
these murderers were all ordinary people.Ask yourself this: If you were
in those countries at those times, would you have been any different?
